It Takes Too Long for Me to Write an Article

February 5, 2025

Writing used to take me forever. I’d sit in front of my computer, fingers hovering over the keyboard, unsure where to start. When I finally got some words down, I’d second-guess myself, delete entire paragraphs, and spend hours rewriting sentences that didn’t sound quite right.

The whole process was frustrating. I loved writing, but it felt exhausting. I’d spend days perfecting an article, only to end up with something that still didn’t feel “good enough.”

Then, I discovered a simple but powerful tool that changed everything—outlining.

Now, what used to take me days, I can finish in an hour. If you’ve ever felt like writing takes too long, I’m going to share how outlines transformed my process and how they can do the same for you.

Why Writing Took Me So Long

Looking back, I realize my biggest struggle wasn’t the writing itself. It was the lack of structure.

Here are a few reasons why writing used to take forever:

  1. I didn’t know where to start. I’d open a blank document and stare at it, waiting for inspiration to hit. Sometimes, it did. Most times, it didn’t.
  2. I kept changing my mind. I’d write a few sentences, then delete them because they didn’t feel right. Then I’d try a different approach, only to change my mind again. It was an endless cycle.
  3. I lacked direction. My thoughts were all over the place. I’d start with one idea and, midway through, realize I wanted to go in a completely different direction.
  4. Editing took forever. Because I wrote without a plan, my drafts were messy. I’d have to restructure entire sections, cut unnecessary details, and rewrite parts that didn’t flow well.

Sound familiar? If you’ve ever felt stuck while writing, you’re not alone. But the good news is, there’s a way to fix it.

The Power of Using an Outline

I used to think outlining was a waste of time. I wanted to jump straight into writing because I thought it would be faster. But I was wrong.

Outlining actually saves time because it:

✅ Gives clarity – You know exactly what you want to say before you start writing.
✅ Prevents writer’s block – No more staring at a blank page wondering what comes next.
✅ Improves flow – When you organize your ideas first, your writing is more logical and engaging.
✅ Reduces editing time – A clear structure means less rewriting and restructuring later.

Once I started outlining, I realized I was spending less time struggling and more time writing. Instead of wrestling with an article for hours, I had a roadmap that made writing effortless.

How I Outline My Articles

If you’ve never outlined before, here’s a simple way to get started. This is the exact process I use:

1. Start with the Main Idea

What’s the core message of your article? If you had to summarize it in one sentence, what would it be?

For example, in this article, my main idea is: “Outlining helps you write faster and more efficiently.”

Everything else in the article supports this idea.

2. Break It Into Sections

Next, I create a basic structure with 3-5 key sections.

For this post, my outline looked like this:

  • Introduction (the problem I faced)
  • Why writing took so long
  • The benefits of outlining
  • My step-by-step outlining process
  • Results & encouragement

This structure keeps me on track and prevents me from rambling.

3. Add Bullet Points Under Each Section

Now, I go deeper by adding supporting details under each section. These are usually short bullet points or quick notes.

For example, under “The Power of Using an Outline,” I jotted down:

  • Saves time
  • Prevents writer’s block
  • Improves flow
  • Reduces editing time

I don’t write full paragraphs at this stage—I just jot down key points to expand on later.

4. Write a Rough Draft

Once I have my outline, I start writing without overthinking. Since I already know what each section will say, I don’t waste time figuring it out mid-draft.

The best part? My writing flows naturally because I’m following a plan.

5. Edit and Refine

The final step is editing, but now it’s much easier. Instead of rearranging a messy draft, I just tweak and polish what’s already structured well.

This method has cut my writing time in half.

The Results: Faster & Better Writing

Since I started outlining, writing has become less stressful and more enjoyable.

✅ Instead of spending hours rewriting, I get my thoughts down quickly.
✅ My articles are clearer and more structured.
✅ I actually finish my drafts instead of abandoning them halfway through.

Most importantly, writing no longer feels like a chore. I don’t waste time struggling with what to say—I just follow my outline and let the words flow.

Try It for Yourself!

If writing takes too long for you, try outlining before you start. It doesn’t have to be complicated—just a few bullet points to organize your thoughts can make a huge difference.

Here’s a challenge:
Before your next article, spend 10 minutes outlining first. Then, compare how fast you write compared to when you didn’t use an outline.

I bet you’ll be surprised at how much easier it is!

Have you ever tried outlining? What’s your writing process like? Let me know in the comments!

This method changed my writing life, and I hope it helps you too. Happy writing! 🚀
