Write on the Scene

Helping Aspiring Writers Face Their Fears and Pursue Their Purpose

Beginning

Are You Afraid to Hit the Publish Button?

December 11, 2024

Are you afraid to hit the publish button? You’re not alone. Most writers have been there. Staring at the screen with their mouse hovering over that intimidating button. The fear is real—fear of judgment, imperfection, and vulnerability. But here’s the thing: you need to push the button anyway.

Why You’re Feeling This Way

It’s natural to worry about how your work will be received.

  • What if people criticize me?
  • What if it’s not good enough?
  • What if I’m not ready?

These thoughts can be paralyzing, but they also show that you care deeply about your craft. The truth is, that writing takes courage, and every writer battles these fears.

Why You Must Share Your Work

You’ve been given knowledge and experiences for a reason. They’re not just for you to keep—they’re meant to help others.

  • Your words might inspire someone to take the first step toward their dream.
  • Your story could make someone feel less alone.
  • Your insight might solve a problem someone is struggling with.

If you keep your writing to yourself, the people who need it most will miss out. Imagine the impact you could make if just one person is touched by what you share.

The Cost of Staying Silent

Let’s flip the script. What happens if you don’t publish?

  • Someone who needs your words may never hear them.
  • You miss the opportunity to grow, learn, and connect with others.
  • You allow fear to hold you back, keeping you from reaching your full writing potential.

The only way to silence your inner critic is to take action. Publishing isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress.

How to Overcome the Fear

If fear is holding you back, try these tips:

  1. Focus on Your Purpose: Think about the one person you’re writing for. Picture them reading your words and feeling uplifted or enlightened.
  2. Let Go of Perfection: Your work doesn’t have to be flawless. Even the best writers improve over time.
  3. Set a Deadline: Give yourself a time limit to publish. Once it’s up, celebrate the milestone.

Push the Button Anyway

Hitting publish is an act of bravery. It’s a statement that says, “I believe in my writing.” Will it be scary? Heck yeah. But the more you do it, the easier it gets.

Remember, your words can change lives—but only if you share them. So take a deep breath, trust your instincts, and push the button.

Your future readers are waiting.

What’s Stopping You?

If you’ve been holding back, I challenge you to publish something today. It doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be you.

Your voice matters. Don’t let fear keep it hidden.
