It’s a Journey

Introduction

For at least 25 years I’ve wanted to be a writer. You’d be amazed by the number of works in progress I have in my Google drives. I had to get rid of my drawer full of incomplete manuscripts.

Early this morning, I sat down and thought about many of the lessons I’ve learned throughout this time and I want to share them with other aspiring writers.

Tame the Fear Monster

  1. Identify your fear: Is it perfectionism, judgment, or something else? Knowing your enemy helps you build a strategy.
  2. Reframe your mindset: Shift from “I can’t write” to “I’m learning and improving.”
  3. Start small: Begin with short, low-pressure exercises like journaling or freewriting.
  4. Embrace imperfection: First drafts are rarely perfect. Aim for progress, not perfection.
  5. Silence the inner critic: Acknowledge its presence but don’t let it control you.
  6. Find your writing groove: Experiment with different times, places, and tools to find what works for you.

Fuel Your Passion

  1. Connect writing to your purpose: How can writing help you achieve your goals or dreams?
  2. Write about what excites you: Choose topics you’re naturally curious or passionate about.
  3. Find inspiration: Read, listen to podcasts, or take classes to spark your creativity.
  4. Set achievable goals: Start with small writing milestones and gradually increase them.
  5. Celebrate your progress: Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small.

Build Your Skills

  1. Take writing courses or workshops: Learn from experienced writers and hone your craft.
  2. Read actively: Pay attention to structure, style, and voice in your favorite books.
  3. Practice daily: Even small writing exercises contribute to long-term improvement.
  4. Join a writing community: Connect with other writers for support and feedback.
  5. Seek feedback: Share your work with trusted readers and be open to constructive criticism.

Share Your Voice

  1. Start a blog or website: Share your writing with a wider audience.
  2. Submit your work to publications: Aim for small publications or online platforms first.
  3. Participate in writing contests or challenges: Push yourself and gain exposure.
  4. Connect with potential collaborators: Team up with other writers on projects.
  5. Speak up and share your knowledge: Give presentations, workshops, or webinars.

Remember

  1. Writing is a journey, not a destination: Enjoy the process, learn from mistakes, and keep growing.
  2. Don’t compare yourself to others: Everyone’s writing journey is unique.
  3. Focus on the intrinsic rewards: Write for the joy of it, not just for external validation.
  4. Never stop learning and exploring: Be curious, be bold, and keep writing your story.

Conclusion

Aspiring Writer, face your fears and pursue your purpose by working on your skills. That way you can unlock your writing superpower. Superpower activated, it will not only be a tool to help you express your thoughts and ideas, but it will allow you to do what you were meant to do with your life. Do everything you can in your power to make a positive difference in the world one word at a time. Remember, the most important step is to simply start writing!
