When I think of consistency in writing I think about how often I sit down to write or how often I submit articles for publication. There is another definition for consistency in writing that has to do with writing style but in this article I will stick with my initial thought.
Consistent Writing Habits
Steps to writing consistently include the following:
- Create a writing schedule
- Prioritize content
- Plan for writer’s block
- Set a daily word count goal
- Keep projects organized
Creating a writing schedule is an essential part of establishing consistent writing habits. By setting specific times for writing, you can cultivate a routine that encourages productivity and creativity.
Prioritizing content involves identifying and focusing on the most important topics or projects first, ensuring that your time is spent wisely. You do this by working on those projects that are more important first but also having time to complete fun pieces, just to break up the monotony.
Planning for writer’s block acknowledges that sometimes we get stuck. When that occurs it’s important to have strategies in place that will reignite your creativity. This may mean doing things such as taking breaks, changing environments, or engaging in brainstorming exercises.
I used to hop in my car and head to the walking park by the river. I don’t know what it is about watching people and seeing the water that gets my creative juices flowing. My notebook would be full of ideas by the time I headed home.
Setting a daily word count goal provides a tangible target. A goal that motivates you to make steady progress and maintain momentum.
I try to write 1000–2000 words per day. Sometimes on just one project and other times I add words to several different projects in a day.
Keeping projects organized involves creating files and storing ideas and research materials in those files for current and future projects. This helps with keeping an efficient workflow and preventing headaches and frustration.
All of these strategies contribute to the development of a disciplined and sustainable writing routine, creating consistency and enhancing the overall quality of the writing process.
Daily Writing Routine
There was a period of time where I published an article every day for a month. It was fun because I had prompts that I wrote to but writing for public consumption every single day was unsustainable so I squashed that practice. I still write every day but I only submit or self-publish 1–3 days per week. For me, that’s a lot more doable. I sometimes toy with the idea of publishing daily for 30 days but I haven’t built up the courage or stamina to do that lately.
I write off and on throughout the day even if it’s only a few words. Mornings are usually my most productive times before my husband wakes up. But I do get to at least format my articles or brainstorm new ideas sometimes when he is awake and otherwise occupied by the TV or a game on his phone.
Overcoming Challenges to Consistent Writing
I hardly ever experience writer’s block. My problem is that I’m constantly coming up with new ideas when I’m trying my best to focus on one thing. But all I do is create a document and name it the idea that I had so when I get the time I can go back to it and create an article or story with it.
I’ve developed this habit of writing down my thoughts as soon as I open my eyes. I came up with the motto: “I think more before 4 am than most people do all day.”
Successful Writers and Consistency
Big, successful writers have writing routines that I like to read about and try to implement in my life. I may only write 2000 words a day for 30 days a few times a year. It’s not sustainable but at least I know it can be done and it shows me that it is something that I can do. I never know if I will get a freelance job writing long pieces of content.
Conclusion
If you want to be a professional writer, you will have to write consistently. Having a routine is imperative. To be your own boss you have to treat your writing as a business. This means setting goals and evaluating your plan, adjusting as needed.
